Successful candidates will be responsible for developing and maintaining operations concepts, systems engineering processes, software requirements, interface definitions, architecture diagrams, and troubleshooting and solving space telescope ground system software operational problems. Candidates will work with members of software development teams to perform design studies and guide design decisions, and will interact with the Integration and Test team to define verification and validation plans for testing requirements. Successful candidates may also perform difficult technical analysis and author technical reports as needed to verify requirements.
Applicants must have a degree in Engineering, Computer Science, Astronomy, Physics, Astrophysics or a related scientific field. Previous experience with software system engineering design and processes and scientific spacecraft ground systems is desirable for the more senior positions. Ideal candidates should possess strong verbal and written communication skills, strong analytical skills, be independent workers, and poses leadership ability.
Depending on skill sets and experience level, candidates may be considered for software systems engineering positions related to front-end planning and scheduling systems, back-end data pipelines and database management systems, or more general systems engineering positions. Candidates with strong experience in software development, satellite operations, or astronomy may be considered in lieu of software systems engineering experience. Experience, skill-set, and education will determine the position level and assignment of the individual.
Experience in some or all of the following areas are preferred:
• Experience with spacecraft missions
• Authoring technical documents
• Object-oriented analysis and design
• Relational databases
• Linux-based systems
• XML and related technologies
• Software Development Lifecycle and Methodologies
